Welfare Considerations

Nest flooding from storm surges or sea level rise destroys entire breeding seasons, causing chick mortality. Disturbance by walkers and dogs causes adults to abandon foraging and increase vigilance stress. Chicks cold and wet from disturbance on cold days suffer hypothermia. Drought events reduce invertebrate prey for chick feeding, causing starvation in poor weather years.
