Numbats are termite-eating marsupials confined to small fragmented populations in Western Australia, highly vulnerable to foxes and cats.
Fox and cat predation causes traumatic deaths. Small isolated populations suffer inbreeding depression reducing health and reproductive success. Numbats outside fenced reserves have very high mortality from predators. Climate warming is drying their habitat in southwest Western Australia. Smoke events from wildfires cause respiratory distress and prey reduction.
