Seabird terns breed in dense noisy colonies highly vulnerable to ground disturbance, predator incursion, and weather events affecting chick survival.
Human disturbance at little tern colonies exposes eggs and chicks to overheating or chilling. Ground predator incursion causes panic stampedes where chicks are trampled. Storm flooding destroys entire clutches and chick cohorts in single events. Adult terns whose colony is destroyed in a season suffer the energetic cost of migration with no breeding success. Late-season storms kill chicks that have not yet fledged.
