Water deprivation causes rapid welfare deterioration — cattle show signs of dehydration within hours of restricted access. Competition at drinkers in housed systems prevents lower-ranking animals from drinking adequately. Frozen water points in winter are a common source of dehydration in outdoor livestock. Water quality including contamination with algae, bacteria, and minerals also affects palatability and welfare. Monitoring water intake through automated systems provides early warning of disease and welfare problems. Providing adequate water access is both legally required and a fundamental welfare responsibility.
