Hedgehogs are one of the most road-casualty-prone British mammals; population declines of over 50% since 2000 are partly attributed to road mortality alongside habitat fragmentation.
Each road collision causes acute physical trauma and death or severe injury. Beyond individual suffering, the population-level impact of road mortality represents a major conservation welfare concern. Urban gardens, parks, and road verges can be made more hedgehog-friendly through simple interventions that reduce both individual injury and population fragmentation.
