Laying Hen Welfare in Free-Range Systems

Free-range egg production is expanding but welfare outcomes vary widely depending on range quality, flock size, and management practices.

Welfare Considerations

Large free-range flocks see dominant hens monopolizing outdoor access with subordinates confined to barns. Keel bone fractures are extremely painful and heal slowly if at all. High flock densities in barns even on free-range farms cause feather-pecking and disease. Pop holes that are inadequate for flock size prevent outdoor access for many birds. Range quality with poor vegetation becomes muddy and unappealing, reducing actual outdoor use.
