Live transport involves confinement in bags or containers without food or appropriate humidity for days or weeks. Pangolins' stress response to handling causes organ failure. Many animals die before reaching markets. Those reaching live markets are subject to further stress before slaughter. Captive rescue pangolins require specialist care that few facilities can provide adequately. Breeding from captive individuals has largely failed, making wild populations the only source.
