Outdoor production provides the most natural living conditions available in commercial pig systems, satisfying rooting, social, and exploratory needs that indoor systems cannot provide. However, outdoor welfare is not guaranteed — extreme weather, inadequate shelter, poor predator management, and disease pressure without good stockmanship can result in welfare outcomes no better than well-managed indoor systems. The best outdoor systems combine environmental advantages with high-quality husbandry.
