Dams and weirs block fish migration routes causing population fragmentation and individual welfare impacts from failed migration attempts and altered habitat conditions.
Blocked fish passage imposes welfare costs at multiple levels: individual fish experience the physiological cost and injury risk of repeated barrier navigation attempts; failed migration prevents reproduction, depriving fish of a fundamental behavioural drive; and population fragmentation causes genetic deterioration that affects the health of all individuals. Fish pass effectiveness varies by design and species — passes designed for salmon may be inadequate for eels or lamprey. Dam removal, where feasible, provides the most complete welfare solution.
