Zoo elephant welfare has improved dramatically through transition from dominance-based management to protected contact; space, social grouping, and environmental complexity remain ongoing challenges.
The shift from free contact to protected contact elephant management has been one of the most significant welfare advances in modern zoos. Removing the need to physically dominate elephants eliminates the use of aversive instruments and builds voluntary cooperation through positive reinforcement. However, space constraints in most zoo settings mean that even the best-managed zoo elephants cannot express natural ranging behaviour, a fundamental limitation that accreditation bodies and zoos continue to grapple with.
