Outdoor cattle systems exemplify how production system choice affects welfare in complex ways. The welfare benefits of movement opportunity, natural behaviour expression, and social stability are real and significant; the welfare risks of poor ground conditions, inadequate nutrition management, and veterinary access challenges in extensive systems are also real. Well-managed outdoor cattle systems achieve excellent welfare; poorly managed ones impose welfare problems that indoor systems with appropriate management would avoid. The determining factor is management quality, not location.
