Obesity in cats and dogs causes chronic joint pain, metabolic disease, and shortened lifespan; it is almost entirely preventable through owner education and appropriate feeding management.
Pet obesity is simultaneously one of the most prevalent and most preventable companion animal welfare problems. The chronic pain of arthritis in overweight joints, the metabolic burden of excess adipose tissue, and the reduced quality of life from exercise intolerance affect millions of pets whose owners care genuinely but do not recognise the problem as serious. Veterinary communication that helps owners understand overweight body condition as a welfare issue rather than a sign of good care is the primary intervention needed.
