Foraging motivation in laying hens is among their strongest behavioural drives; providing foraging opportunities through scratch areas, pecking substrates, and range access significantly improves welfare.
Foraging is so central to laying hen behaviour that its deprivation represents a fundamental welfare deficit in barren housing systems. The motivation is so strong that hens without foraging outlets redirect scratching to cage floors, perform vacuum scratching movements, and show frustration behaviours. Providing foraging enrichment — even simple scratch areas with loose litter in otherwise conventional systems — satisfies a priority motivation and reduces the negative affect associated with its deprivation.
