Tortoises are among the most long-lived companion animals, with some species surviving 100+ years; their complex care needs are frequently unmet, causing chronic welfare deficits.
Tortoise welfare challenges arise from the combination of very long lifespans, complex husbandry requirements, and widespread underestimation of those requirements at point of acquisition. A tortoise inadequately cared for for a decade has experienced years of chronic welfare deficit. The welfare problems caused by incorrect husbandry — metabolic bone disease from inadequate UVB, respiratory disease from incorrect temperature, hibernation death from inadequate preparation — are all preventable with appropriate knowledge and infrastructure.
