Dogs need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise; cognitive enrichment through problem-solving, nose work, and training significantly improves welfare especially for dogs with limited outdoor access.
Cognitive enrichment for dogs addresses a welfare need that physical exercise alone cannot meet. Dogs evolved as problem-solvers with strong scent-tracking, prey-seeking, and social cognition abilities that are engaged by enrichment activities and unmet by simple physical exercise. Dogs that receive regular cognitive engagement show better behavioural welfare, lower anxiety indicators, and increased positive interaction with their owners. Mental stimulation is particularly critical for dogs confined to small spaces, those with mobility limitations, and breeds selected for high working drive.
