Outdoor pig systems provide the closest available equivalent to natural pig behaviour in commercial production. The combination of rooting substrate, wallowing facilities, shade, and open space enables a behavioural repertoire impossible in any indoor system. Outdoor production requires management investment — predator protection, weather management, shade provision, rotation to prevent poaching — but the welfare benefits for animals that can fully express natural behaviours are substantial.
