Wildlife rehabilitation quality varies enormously; evidence-based standards for housing, nutrition, veterinary care, and release assessment significantly improve welfare and rehabilitation success.
Wildlife rehabilitation welfare encompasses the entire process from admission through treatment, recovery, and release. Each phase has specific welfare requirements: minimising human contact and stress during treatment; providing species-appropriate housing and nutrition during recovery; assessing release readiness through physical and behavioural criteria; and selecting appropriate release sites for successful return to wild life. Soft-release programmes that provide supplementary support during the transition from captive to wild conditions dramatically improve post-release welfare and survival.
