Many popular dog breeds carry heritable conditions that cause lifelong pain and reduced quality of life. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, for example, causes chronic respiratory distress in flat-faced breeds. Responsible breeding programs and breed standard reform are urgently needed to protect dog welfare.
