Stereotypic behaviours in horses indicate unmet behavioural needs and are associated with poor welfare in stabling systems.
Stable vices are indicators of chronic welfare problems arising from the restriction of natural behaviours in stabled horses. Limited forage access, social isolation, and restricted movement are key risk factors. Management changes including increased forage, turnout, and social contact can reduce the development of stereotypies and improve welfare.
