Rooting is a fundamental behavioural need in pigs that is frequently frustrated in barren intensive farming environments.
The frustration of rooting behaviour in barren pig housing is associated with redirected behaviours including tail biting, ear biting, and aggression. Provision of manipulable substrates such as straw, compost, or soil allows pigs to express this core behavioural need and significantly reduces problem behaviours and their welfare consequences.
