Beyond preventing suffering, promoting positive welfare states in cats involves understanding what cats find rewarding, engaging, and enjoyable.
Positive welfare science goes beyond the Five Freedoms to ask what cats enjoy and value. Understanding that cats are intrinsically motivated to hunt, explore, mark territory, and engage in social behaviour on their own terms enables owners to provide environments that actively promote positive experiences. A cat that chooses to interact, shows slow blinking, and engages in play is expressing positive welfare states.
