Stocking density is one of the most important determinants of broiler welfare outcomes.
Broiler chickens at high stocking densities cannot perform natural behaviours, experience increased competition for resources, and show higher rates of litter-contact conditions including hock burn and breast blisters. High heat and ammonia from overcrowded litter cause chronic respiratory irritation. Lower stocking density is one of the most evidence-based welfare improvements available.
