Fish dying in oxygen-depleted or chemically polluted water experience acute respiratory distress, disorientation, and often prolonged struggling before death. Mass kill events may affect tens of thousands of individual fish simultaneously. The suffering of individual fish in pollution events is a welfare crisis in addition to an ecological one.
