White-nose syndrome has killed millions of bats in North America and threatens European species.
Bats dying from white-nose syndrome wake repeatedly during hibernation, burning fat reserves they cannot replace in winter. They experience cold, starvation, and metabolic distress before death. The disease front continues to spread, threatening species whose populations cannot recover quickly. Monitoring, biosecurity at cave sites, and vaccination research are the primary welfare interventions.
