Welfare Considerations

Bees show sophisticated navigation, learning, and social behaviours that suggest their welfare is morally relevant. Varroa mite infestation causes colony collapse that is distressing at the individual bee level — mites feeding on developing bees impair their development and health. Pesticide exposure causes disorientation and death in individual foragers. While bee sentience is debated, the scale of bee mortality from human activities warrants serious moral attention.
