Dairy cow housing systems span a wide welfare spectrum. Zero-grazing systems deny outdoor access entirely, preventing natural behaviours including grazing and free movement across landscapes. Cubicle systems allow movement within buildings but restrict natural locomotion. Pasture-based systems with outdoor access allow the broadest behavioural repertoire and are associated with better welfare outcomes for most measures.
