Pangolins in degraded habitats with reduced ant and termite availability must travel further to meet nutritional needs, increasing energy expenditure and exposure to predators and poachers. Habitat fragmentation prevents normal territorial behaviour. Each pangolin in inadequate habitat experiences cumulative welfare costs from nutritional stress, over-exertion, and increased threat exposure.
