Farmed Pig Water Access and Drinking Behaviour

Adequate water provision is fundamental to pig health and welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pigs with inadequate water access experience acute distress from thirst, reduced feed intake, and increased aggression as they compete for limited water. Even short periods of water deprivation cause significant welfare harm in hot conditions. Water provision that is technically available but practically inaccessible — through faulty drinkers, inadequate flow rates, or insufficient numbers — is a common but preventable welfare failure.
