Parrots, finches, and other companion birds have complex social, cognitive, and behavioural needs that are frequently unmet in typical pet situations, causing chronic stress and suffering.
Companion birds are among the most welfare-challenged pets. Their social, cognitive, and physical needs are demanding and rarely met in single-bird, small-cage situations. Parrots form strong pair bonds and suffer from social isolation. Intelligent species require constant cognitive stimulation to avoid psychological distress. Without flight, natural foraging, and social interaction, many birds develop stereotypic behaviours, self-mutilation, and psychological disorders. The exotic bird trade also causes enormous suffering in capture, transport, and the high mortality of illegally imported birds.
