Atlantic salmon are routinely crowded during farming operations, causing acute and chronic stress with measurable impacts on immune function, behaviour, and welfare.
Crowding triggers the fish stress response: cortisol release, increased heart rate, and altered behaviour. During crowding operations for treatments or harvest, salmon show evasive behaviour, fin damage from collisions, and scale loss. Chronically high densities suppress feeding, increase aggression and injury, and reduce the capacity to mount immune responses — making stressed fish more vulnerable to the sea lice and disease challenges that characterise intensive salmon farming.
