Space constraints in zoos fundamentally limit the locomotion budgets of large, wide-ranging mammals. Chronic restriction of movement is associated with joint problems, obesity, and psychological distress. Social needs are often unmet when species require large cohesive groups or specific social structures not replicable in small zoo populations. Progressive zoos invest in naturalistic enclosures, complex environments, and sophisticated enrichment, but the welfare ceiling in zoo settings remains below what large mammals can achieve in quality wild habitats.
