Stress is one of the most common and under-recognised welfare problems in domestic cats. Identifying stress triggers and providing appropriate support can dramatically improve quality of life.
Chronic stress in cats causes physical illness as well as psychological suffering. FIC, caused by stress-induced bladder inflammation, is extremely painful and frequently recurrent in stressed cats. Over-grooming causes skin damage and hair loss. Chronic anxiety affects quality of life continuously — a stressed cat is experiencing a negative emotional state that pervades its daily experience. Identifying and removing or mitigating stressors, providing appropriate environmental resources, and using pheromone or pharmacological support where needed can transform welfare for individual cats.
