Trout in intensive systems face multiple simultaneous welfare challenges. High stocking densities increase disease transmission and social competition, causing fin damage and stress. Handling operations — grading, sampling, treatment — mimic predation and cause intense fear responses. Water quality fluctuations affect physiology and behaviour. Slaughter by asphyxiation in ice is widely practised but keeps trout conscious and struggling for minutes. The research base for trout welfare is stronger than for many other aquaculture species, enabling evidence-based improvement through certification standards and producer engagement.
