Welfare Considerations

Farmed deer have not undergone the same degree of domestication as cattle, sheep, and pigs — they retain their prey-animal stress response to human approach and handling. Every handling event is acutely stressful. Velvet antler removal, if performed without anaesthesia, causes severe pain. Transport causes profound physiological stress that can cause capture myopathy — a breakdown of muscle tissue from extreme fear response — resulting in death even when physical injuries are absent. The welfare challenges of deer farming are partly intrinsic to deer nature and partly a result of the industry's small scale preventing investment in appropriate handling facilities.
