Feeding wild birds benefits millions of individuals, but poor practice can cause disease, dependency, and harm to the very birds it aims to help.
Dirty feeders concentrate birds and enable transmission of Salmonella, Trichomonas, and Avian pox. Trichomonad disease (finch disease) has decimated greenfinch populations in the UK since 2006. Inappropriate foods (dry bread, salted peanuts, avocado) cause nutritional harm and aspiration in chicks. Clean feeders with appropriate foods dramatically improve welfare outcomes.
