The 3Rs framework — Replace, Reduce, Refine — guides efforts to minimise animal use in research, with significant progress but much work remaining.
Animals used in research experience varied levels of suffering from minor procedures to severe experimental endpoints. Pain, fear, and distress are common across many research contexts. The 3Rs have reduced animal use significantly but not eliminated it. Where animals must be used, refinement to minimise suffering is an ethical obligation. The development of non-animal models is both a welfare and scientific priority.
