Welfare Considerations

Guinea fowl in intensive systems show high rates of feather pecking, cannibalism, and fear responses. Their strong flight instincts mean they frequently injure themselves attempting to flee. Beak trimming is used to reduce pecking injuries. Intensive confinement prevents the dustbathing, foraging, and ranging behaviour essential to their welfare. Mortality in intensive systems is higher than for broiler chickens.
