Welfare Considerations

Quail in intensive systems are unable to perform most natural behaviours including dustbathing, wing flapping, and ranging. Extreme stocking densities cause chronic stress and severe feather damage. Foot problems from wire mesh floors are common. Many welfare regulations covering chickens do not extend to quail, creating a regulatory gap. Their small size makes individual welfare assessment extremely difficult.
