Separation anxiety affects an estimated 14-17% of pet dogs, causing significant suffering and being one of the leading reasons dogs are surrendered to shelters.
Dogs with separation anxiety experience genuine panic when left alone. Elevated cortisol, rapid heart rate, and distress vocalisations are measurable physiological indicators of suffering. Destructive behaviour and house-soiling are symptoms of fear, not defiance. Punishment worsens anxiety by adding fear of the owner's return. The post-pandemic increase in working from home followed by return to office has created a generation of dogs with inadequate independence. Prevention through gradual alone-time habituation is far easier than treatment.
