Infrared beak treatment of day-old chicks is widely used to prevent injurious pecking, but raises welfare questions about both the procedure and the management failures it compensates for.
Infrared beak treatment at day-old causes acute pain and temporary impairment of feeding. Long-term neurological consequences are debated. The procedure is considered a lesser welfare harm than the chronic suffering from injurious pecking it prevents in poorly managed high-density systems. However, treating symptoms rather than causes (stocking density, enrichment, breed selection) perpetuates management failures. Eliminating the need for beak treatment requires systemic improvements in housing and management.
