Crabs are increasingly recognised as sentient animals, with welfare concerns around boiling alive, transport in dry conditions, and the growing aquaculture industry.
Research by Prof. Robert Elwood demonstrated that shore crabs and hermit crabs show behavioural responses consistent with pain experience. Boiling crabs alive causes progressive tissue damage and likely prolonged suffering. Live transport in cool, dry conditions causes physiological stress and gill damage. Chilling before killing reduces but does not eliminate awareness. Spiking (inserting a spike into the brain) is considered the most humane method for home killing of crabs.
