Parrots are among the most popular pets globally but among the most poorly provided for, with welfare implications from boredom, isolation, and inappropriate housing.
Captive parrots denied conspecific companionship become bonded to humans in ways that cause distress when owners are absent. Inappropriate diets cause nutritional deficiencies including hypocalcemia and vitamin A deficiency. Inadequate space prevents flight and exercise. Feather-destructive behavior affects a high proportion of captive parrots and indicates chronic distress. The decades-long lifespan means poor welfare decisions have very long-term consequences.
