Different philosophical frameworks lead to different conclusions about our obligations to animals, with practical implications for welfare policy and advocacy.
Utilitarian approaches lead to welfare improvement advocacy (minimise suffering, improve conditions) rather than abolitionism. Rights-based approaches lead to vegan advocacy and opposition to any use of animals. Relational approaches emphasise care and empathy. In practice, all three frameworks have informed the animal welfare movement: welfare legislation draws on utilitarian reasoning; direct action draws on rights reasoning; sanctuary work draws on relational reasoning. Understanding these frameworks helps advocates engage effectively across different audiences.
