Water quality is one of the most fundamental determinants of fish welfare in aquaculture, yet it is often compromised by stocking density, waste accumulation, and management failures.
Fish in suboptimal water conditions experience physiological stress that impairs immune function, growth, and behaviour. Chronic hypoxia (low oxygen) is particularly distressing — fish crowded near the surface gasping are clearly in poor welfare states. Ammonia and CO2 accumulation at high densities can cause pain and gill damage. Good water quality management is not only a welfare necessity but also improves production efficiency, creating alignment between animal welfare and farm economics.
