Welfare Considerations

Dust-bathing is one of the best-studied examples of a motivated behaviour in farm animals. Providing appropriate loose substrate is a relatively low-cost intervention with high welfare benefit. Outdoor access systems and some barn systems allow real dust-bathing; cage systems do not.
