Animal shelters provide temporary care for millions of dogs annually, but shelter environments can cause significant stress and behavioural deterioration if poorly managed.
Shelters are inherently stressful environments for dogs. The combination of novel smells, sounds, and social disruption, combined with lack of control and limited exercise, causes acute then chronic stress. Dogs in shelter develop behaviours — barrier frustration, excessive barking, fearfulness — that paradoxically reduce their attractiveness to adopters, creating a negative cycle. Investing in enrichment, individual assessment, foster networks, and behaviour rehabilitation is both a welfare and efficiency investment for shelters.
