Welfare Considerations

Barn systems improve on cages but lack outdoor access. Free-range and organic systems offer the most opportunity for natural behaviour but management quality — flock size, range quality, stocking density — determines actual welfare outcomes. The evidence supports free-range as the best available commercial option, with organic typically providing additional welfare benefits.
