Assessing the welfare of wild animals presents unique methodological challenges, but advances in remote sensing, biologging, and biomarkers are opening new frontiers.
Wild animal welfare is both the largest in scope and most methodologically challenging area of welfare science. The number of wild animals vastly exceeds domesticated populations, yet welfare assessment tools designed for farms and zoos are poorly adapted to wild settings. Remote biologging technologies are transforming our ability to monitor individual animal experience in the wild, providing data on stress responses, activity patterns, and physiological state. Building welfare thinking into conservation and wildlife management will require investment in both tools and conceptual frameworks.
