Feral cats live difficult lives — injuries from fighting, respiratory disease, malnutrition, and exposure are common. The ethical response to this population welfare crisis is contested: TNR reduces population growth and improves existing cat welfare but does not eliminate the problem. Mass culling causes suffering to individual cats without achieving long-term population reduction. Providing basic veterinary care and nutrition to TNR-managed colonies addresses immediate welfare needs while gradually reducing population size. Community cat programme investment is one of the most impactful interventions for this population.
