Free-range certification varies enormously in practice. Legal minimum free-range allows indoor stocking of up to 9 birds per square metre and flocks of up to 9,000 birds — both of which compromise welfare significantly. Range quality is often poor — bare soil with no vegetation providing little incentive for birds to go outside. Genuine free-range welfare requires smaller flock sizes, high-quality ranges with vegetation and shade, accessible pop holes, and good indoor management. Choosing RSPCA Assured or organic certified free-range provides stronger welfare guarantees.
